A nickel coin is worth considerably more than five cents even after the pullback in nickel prices from record highs.

The coin, which is 25% nickel and 75% copper, now has a so-called melt value of about eight cents, according to an estimate by Barron’s based on copper and nickel prices on the London Metal Exchange. The U.S. Mint is awaiting congressional authorization to potentially change the composition of the coin and lower production costs.
