The U.S. government narrowly averted a midnight shutdown of most federal agencies when the House passed a short-term spending bill hours before the deadline.

The stopgap bill, which the Senate passed Thursday, passed 230 to 201 and now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk for his signature. But Republican opposition in the House forecasts potential turmoil when the legislation expires Dec. 16, especially if the GOP wins control of one or both chambers in the November midterms.

MIAMI — With at least 70 people dead in Florida in the wake of Hurricane Ian, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell promised to provide assistance to Floridians as they recover from the powerful Category 4 storm, but also said it’s important to consider the risk of rebuilding in the state’s mos…

While most Floridians woke up to a normal Sunday with plans for church, family gatherings and watching football, many people in the Southwest Florida coast, the areas most ravaged by Hurricane Ian, spent the day growing weary, frustrated and angry as they waited for electricity, gas, water, …

New England Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer's first start since 2020 will come against a Green Bay Packers secondary that’s missing star cornerback Jaire Alexander. The Packers included Alexander among their list of inactive players for Sunday afternoon’s game. Alexander injured his groin early in the Packers’ 14-12 victory at Tampa Bay. Hoyer is starting because Mac Jones injured his left ankle last week in a 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers is missing a second straight game with a knee injury.

ATHENS, GREECE (AP) - Results from Greek football:

Anthony Richardson threw for 240 yards and two touchdowns, a top-level NFL prospect who looked comfortable playing on a Sunday, and Florida handled lower-division Eastern Washington 52-17 in a game delayed a day by Hurricane Ian. The Gators scored touchdowns on their first five possessions while having their way with the FCS-level Eagles. Richardson’s first throw was a 75-yard TD pass to Justin Shorter. His first run went for 45 yards and set up another score. He briefly left the game in the first half to get his right ankle tapped but later returned and was done for the day early in the third quarter. He completed 8 of 10 passes, with an interception on a deep ball to open the second half.

MADRID (AP) - Results from Spanish football:

The United Nations says that negotiations between Yemen’s warring sides to extend a nationwide cease-fire will continue, after an agreement was not reached before a deadline on Sunday. In a statement, the U.N.'s envoy to Yemen called on all sides to refrain from acts of provocation as the talks continue. The development dampers hopes that the 6-month-old ceasefire could have turned into a longer peace. The truce, which initially took effect in April, is the longest lull of fighting in Yemen’s civil war, now in its eighth year. The brutal conflict began in 2014, when the Iranian-backed Houthis seized the capital of Sanaa and much of northern Yemen and forced the government into exile.

LOS ANGELES — Rick Caruso has made significant progress in the race for Los Angeles mayor, closing a large part of the gap with Rep. Karen Bass since August, but the billionaire businessman still trails by double digits among the people who are likeliest to vote.

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (AP) - Results from Danish football:

The federal government has sold off a lighthouse in the middle of the Chesapeake Bay for a six-figure sum after a bidding war at auction. The Washington Post reports the Hooper Island Lighthouse at first drew little interest but ended up selling for a winning bid of $192,000. The rusting and rather inhospitable lighthouse known locally as the “sparkplug” has an outer ladder but no nearby dock for a boat to moor. A 2019 inspection also found lead-based paint, asbestos, benzene and other dangerous substances inside, where there is no water, electricity or other utilities. The identity of the new owner wasn't immediately clear.

Residents living in parts of central Florida donned fishing waders, boots and bug spray and canoed or kayaked their way to their homes on streets where floodwaters continued rising Sunday despite it being four days since Hurricane Ian tore through the state. The waters flooded homes and streets that had been passable just a day or two earlier. Ben Bertat found 4 inches of water in his house by Lake Harney off North Jungle street in a rural part of Seminole County north of Orlando after kayaking to it Sunday morning. Only a day earlier, there had been no water.

LOS ANGELES — Hackers released data from the Los Angeles school district on Saturday, a day after Superintendent Albert Carvalho said he would not negotiate with or pay a ransom to the criminal syndicate.

Authorities say an American Airlines flight from Texas to New Mexico was evacuated after landing at the Albuquerque airport because of a security threat. Officials at Albuquerque International Sunport say all 179 people aboard Flight 928 from Dallas-Fort Worth were taken off the jet Sunday morning. They were taken by bus to the terminal, and no injuries were reported. FBI officials say that the matter is being investigated and are not disclosing the nature of the security threat. Airport officials say American Airlines passengers flying out of the airport are expected to see flight delays while the episode is investigated.

LOS ANGELES — The Houston-based company operating the oil pipeline that ruptured off Huntington Beach last fall announced Saturday that the government has green-lighted its plans to repair the pipeline, raising the possibility it will be operational again early next year.

LOS ANGELES — Authorities were continuing Sunday to search for a man who stabbed a woman to death in front of her children at her East Los Angeles home.

Police in Nebraska say a passenger’s cellphone automatically alerted responders after a car hit a tree in a crash that killed all six of its young occupants. Five men in the car died at the scene of the crash in Lincoln in the wee hours of Sunday. A woman died later at a hospital. The victims ranged in age from 21 to 24. Police have not released details on what caused the crash. But they say it was reported by an iPhone that detected the impact and called responders automatically when the phone’s owner didn’t respond.

MIAMI — The bodies of three women were found in mangroves near Naval Air Station Key West Saturday afternoon, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday.
