LOS ANGELES — Even with the almost supernatural intervention of Shohei Ohtani, the Angels were very nearly swept this week by the Kansas City Royals. The Royals are not a good team. The Angels might not be, either. As of Thursday, Baseball Prospectus projects them with a one in 10 chance of …

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — About 15 years ago now, Sporting Kansas City’s new ownership group contemplated a site for a soccer-specific stadium, making good on a vision Lamar Hunt had told them would be a necessity for survival in this town.

PITTSBURGH — The defection of Brooks Koepka to the LIV Golf series — with another prominent name expected to soon follow — is yet another example of the Saudi-backed circuit targeting some of the PGA Tour's most popular players. Or so it would appear.

DALLAS — It started with a series of direct messages to a handful of players. The proposed deal was a simple one: a one-time, promotional transaction. Post to Instagram for Live Nation about a Jonas Brothers concert coming to town and get a couple hundred bucks in return. It was the type of …

Train stations are all but deserted across Britain on the third day of a national strike that snarled the weekend plans of millions. Train companies said only a fifth of passenger services would run on Saturday. About 40,000 cleaners, signalers, maintenance workers and station staff have walked off the job in Britain’s biggest and most disruptive railway strike for 30 years. The same workers held 24-hour strikes on Tuesday and Thursday in a dispute over jobs, pay and working conditions. The rail union is seeking a substantial pay raise as workers face a cost-of-living squeeze. Train companies, meanwhile, are seeking to cut costs and staffing after two years in which emergency government funding kept them afloat during the pandemic.

Russian forces are trying to block a city in eastern Ukraine after their relentless assault on the next-door city forced Ukrainian troops to begin withdrawal after weeks of intense fighting. The Luhansk region’s governor said Saturday that Russian forces are attempting to blockade Lysychansk from the south. That city lies next to Sievierodonetsk, which has endured relentless assault and house-to-house fighting for weeks. Russian bombardment has reduced most of Sievierodonetsk to rubble and cut its population from 100,0000 to 10,000. Russia also launched missile attacks on areas far from the heart of the eastern battles.

Tens of thousands of protesters are expected to gather in Munich as the Group of Seven leading economic powers — the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan — are set to hold their annual gathering in the Bavarian Alps in Germany. Police are expecting around 20,000 protesters in the Bavarian city on Saturday. Fifteen groups critical of globalization will participate in the demonstrations. They demand a phase-out of fossil fuels, the preservation of animal and plant diversity, social justice on the planet and a fight against hunger. The G-7 leaders are expected to start arriving Saturday afternoon and will tackle issues such as Russia’s war on Ukraine, climate change, energy and the looming food security crisis.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has celebrated the opening of the country’s longest bridge, which took eight years to build amid setbacks involving political conflict and corruption allegations. The 4.04-mile bridge spanning the Padma River cost an estimated $3.6 billion and was paid for with domestic funds after the World Bank and other global lending agencies declined to finance the project. The bridge, which will open to the public on Sunday, will improve links with the nation’s capital, Dhaka, slashing the distance between the city and Bangladesh’s second-largest seaport, Mongla, by 62 miles. Economists say the bridge will increase Bangladesh’s gross domestic product by an additional 1.3% per year.

LOS ANGELES — Less than a month after sweeping water restrictions took effect across Southern California, early indications suggest residents are finally heeding calls to conserve as officials report a noticeable drop in demand throughout the region.

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe and Germany’s deputy chancellor are to inaugurate a new museum that tells the story of the generations of refugees who have shaped Danish society. The story of the museum, which will be inaugurated Saturday, starts with the Germans who fled the Soviet advance during World War II. “Flugt — Refugee Museum of Denmark” was created on the site of a camp in southwestern Denmark that housed up to 100,000 refugees from Germany in the postwar years. Denmark was a haven for refugees in the past. But in recent years it has sought to place strict limits on the number of asylum-seekers that it will accept.

Hundreds of people, mostly ethnic Amhara, were slaughtered in a village and its surroundings this month in the latest explosion of ethnic violence in Ethiopia, Africa’s second most populous nation. Ethiopians are again left wondering why the federal government failed to protect them from the violent side of the country’s ethnic tensions — and why ethnic minorities in a federal system based on identity are left so vulnerable. The Amhara Association of America said it has confirmed 503 civilians killed, and bodies are still being found. Survivors described to The Associated Press “a total bloodbath” even after they warned local officials.

Washoe County has established a legal assistance fund for county employees who’ve been unfairly attacked or harassed in public. The move comes as tempers increasingly flare during hostile confrontations over election procedures and other controversies. The Reno Gazette Journal reports the legal and personal services approved this week will be available to county workers, but not elected officials. The overall fund would be capped at $150,000 annually. County Manager Eric Brown says it's an effort to make sure that the rights of the county's employees are protected. He says public discourse has grown hostile to the point that some county employees have received death threats.

Palestinian officials say a 16-year-old youth has been killed by Israeli gunfire in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military says soldiers opened fire after a group of Palestinians threw rocks along a main highway near the city of Ramallah. The official Palestinian news agency Wafa says the boy was wounded by Israeli gunfire and then taken away by Israeli troops. It says the boy died in Israeli custody. The West Bank has experienced an uptick in violence in recent months.

They are the most fiercely polarizing issues in American life: abortion and guns. And two momentous decisions by the Supreme Court in two days have done anything but resolve them. Instead, they've fired up debate about whether the court’s conservative justices are being consistent to history and the Constitution — or citing them to justify political preferences, To some critics, the rulings represent an obvious and deeply damaging contradiction: How can the court justify restricting the ability of states to regulate guns while expanding the right of states to regulate abortion? To supporters, the court’s conservatives are staying true to the country’s founding principles and undoing errors of the past.

Officials say a Pakistani military cargo plane carrying relief goods for Afghanistan’s earthquake-affected people has landed at the Khost airport. Tents, food and medical supplies are rolling into the mountainous region. Thousands were left homeless or injured by this week’s powerful earthquake, which state media said killed 1,150 people. An aftershock Friday took five more lives. Among the dead from Wednesday’s magnitude 6 quake are 121 children and that figure is expected to climb. That's according to the U.N. children's agency in Afghanistan. Mansoor Ahmad Khan, Pakistan’s ambassador in the Afghan capital of Kabul, said relief goods dispatched by Pakistan on Saturday have been handed over to Taliban officials.
